Don’t Make Me Laugh
Six weeks apart. Tonight, you remember what you liked about him.
“Stop making me laugh,” you tell him. “You’re ruining our breakup.”
Pablo tries to look serious. That only makes it worse.
It’s Inés’s birthday. You both promised to come and not make her choose between you. Over dinner, you’ve managed to talk to everyone, say you’re doing well and not ask Pablo whether he’s met someone.
The difficult part has been trying not to look over at him whenever someone says something funny. You still want to check whether he’s laughing too.
Now you’ve drifted a little way from the others. Neither of you seems in a hurry to go back.
“Why weren’t you like this at home?” you ask.
“Like what?”
“The way you’ve been all evening. Like you actually want to be here.”
Pablo stops smiling.
“I was exhausted.”
“Yes. With me, you were always exhausted.”
You regret your tone, but not saying it.
“I thought we’d get through it,” he says.
“So did I.”
You hear Inés laughing in the living room. You could go back to her, leave the conversation there and tell everyone tomorrow that the evening went quite well.
“Are you happier now?” Pablo asks.
You’ve told everyone else you are.
